Pillar Rock, located in the English Lake District, known as
the birthplace of English rock climbing. This prominent rock formation on the
flanks of the mountain known as Pillar required mountaineering and climbing gear
for ascents, unlike other summits. The first recorded climb was in 1826, by a shepherd named John Atkinson.
